Skill Upgrading and Imports in US Manufacturing

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Recent theoretical models show that international trade can induce within-industry skillupgrading by raising R&D intensity and creating skill-biased technologies. This paper tests this assertion by estimating the effect of rising import shares on wage shares for 4-digit SIC US manufacturing industries. Using Arellano-Bond estimation to account for the endogeneity of imports, I find that neither rising import shares nor changes in outsourcing are correlated with rising skill intensity in US manufacturing between 1980 and 1988. Between 1990 and 1996, however, it appears that rising import shares are associated with lower skill-intensity. It does not appear that imports from low-wage countries have a stronger effect on skill intensity relative to non-low-wage imports. JEL Codes: F14, F16, J21, J30

Skill Upgrading and Imports in US Manufacturing

The majority of skill-upgrading in the United States in the 1980s and early 1990s was due to within industry shifts in skill-intensity. Traditional trade theory, represented by the HeckscherOhlin model, predicts that trade affects relative employment primarily by shifting resources across industries. For this reason, many economists have concluded that international trade has played a minor rol...

International Capital Movements and Relative Wages: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing Industries

In this paper, we use a multi-sector specific factors model with international capital mobility to examine the effects of globalization on the skill premium in U.S. manufacturing industries. This model allows us to identify two channels through which globalization affects relative wages: effects of international capital flows transmitted through changes in interest rates, and effects of international...

Trade Openness, Technology Adoption and the Demand for Skills: Evidence from Turkish Microdata

In this paper we report evidence on the relationship between trade openness, technology adoption and relative demand for skilled labour in the Turkish manufacturing sector, using firm level data over the period 1980-2001. We first depict the simultaneous increasing trends in international openness and in demand for skills and we show that the shift of the relative demand for labour was mainly d...

The Role of “Skill enhancing Trade” in Brazil: Some Evidence from Microdata

Brazil was characterised by a marked process of trade liberalisation in the ‘90s, resulting in a dramatic increase in the volumes of exports and imports since the year 2000.Over the same period, the relative demand for skilled labour has increased substantially. To investigate whether these two simultaneous phenomena are linked is the purpose of this paper. More in particular, this study focuse...

WP 03-3 Survival of the Best Fit: Exposure to Low-Wage Countries and the (Uneven) Growth of US Manufacturing Plants

This paper examines the role of international trade in the reallocation of U.S. manufacturing activity within and across industries from 1977 to 1997. It introduces a new measure of industry exposure to international trade, motivated by the Heckscher-Ohlin model, which focuses on where imports originate rather than their overall level. Results demonstrate that plant survival as well as output a...
